Sally Phillips, PhD, LP

This type of work can help people discover and create more meaning in their lives, according to their goals and values. I have lived this type of work through my training and experience, as a psychologist and person. If this sounds like the kind of therapy you’d be interested in, I would be a companion in your suffering and walk beside you in your growth.

Welcome! I'm Dr. Sally Phillips

I earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Miami University and completed an internship and post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Psychology at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine.

I am a MN licensed psychologist with many years of experience helping people from a psychoanalytic and existential perspective. I invite and walk with you in asking: Who am I? Who do I want to become? What is getting in my way? Why do I keep having the same problems in my relationships and life?

Together we will think about these questions in an effort to live a life with more freedom and meaning. I believe that people become more free when we explore the past and the unconscious is made conscious, which enables choice in the present and future, rather than the unknowing and frustrating repetition of old patterns.

Specialties

  • Working through the unique challenges of developmental transitions to young adulthood, middle adulthood, and old age.  Providing support and guidance in parenting, divorce and step or co-parenting.

  • I view adoption as affecting adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents throughout the life cycle. The experience of loss and grief, and attachment disruptions have diverse impacts at various points in each member of the adoption constellation's life. They must be understood and worked through sensitively. Often times behavioral or emotional difficulties can be ameliorated through understanding and working-through the complexities of the adoption experience at various points in time, so that feelings can be understood, honored, and worked-through, rather than acted out or repeated. As a transracial adoptee myself, I have a special interest in working with adult adoptees regarding these issues, including the process of ethnic identity development for those “living in two worlds” and navigating the “space between".  I also conduct pre-adoption psychological evaluations and am in a unique position to do so as a psychologist with a specialty in adoption.
